WORKING TOGETHER. GROWING TOGETHER.

Growing together Strong projects

viadonau – austrian waterways company employs more than 260 people.  Around 140 of them work at the headquarters in Vienna-Donaustadt, which, in addition to the management, is home to the company′s seven specialist departments. 60 experts in flood protection, the environment and bank care ensure optimal customer support in four service centers along the Danube in Angern, Aschach, Krems and Bad Deutsch-Altenburg and coordinate their route maintenance plans and activities from here. Around 60 lock supervision employees regulate daily shipping traffic at ten locks - nine Danube locks and the Nußdorf lock on the Vienna Danube Canal.

viadonau was founded in 2005 by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Transport, Innovation and Technology (bmvit) to preserve and develop the Danube waterway and is now a subsidiary of the Federal Ministry for Climate Protection, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation and Technology (BMK).

Infrastructure management

viadonau ensures an efficient and reliable waterway infrastructure. This includes the creation and maintenance of fairway parameters, the care and maintenance of the banks and the ongoing provision of hydrographic and hydrological data. viadonau is also responsible for many ecological and integrative hydraulic engineering and renaturation projects: these give the river back its natural area and create new habitat for animals and plants.

Traffic management on the Austrian Danube

viadonau operates DoRIS - Donau River Information Services - an information and management system for shipping on the Austrian Danube and supports the implementation of river information services throughout the Danube region. Traffic management also includes the operation of the Danube locks.

Development of inland shipping

In order for more goods to be transported on the environmentally friendly and cost-effective Danube waterway, there needs to be a comprehensive improvement in the framework conditions both in terms of Danube shipping infrastructure and in terms of services. Together with national and international partners from all over Europe, viadonau develops lead projects to modernize and make Danube shipping more attractive for the sustainable transport of goods.

Flood protection

viadonau builds and operates flood dams and systems in Vienna and Lower Austria, on the Danube, March and Thaya to protect the population. Viadonau is committed to protecting nature as much as possible through extensive ecological accompanying measures.
